Six Plays, One Day- our 7.30 performance

As we’re getting ready for our festival of plays on Saturday 21st September 2024 at Derby Theatre, here’s a little bit about the two plays you can see at 7.30pm:

WAITING FOR GODWYN by Jeff Tullin

Waiting for Godwyn is (among other things) a light hearted look at the trials and tribulations of advancing years, and the refusal to grow old gracefully,  Two ladies about to take a much-needed trip abroad, who are definitely no better than they should be.

About Jeff: Jeff is also seeing the effects of not owning a picture in the attic, and has taken the opportunity presented by Covid to retire sooner than planned, and get back to his love of acting and writing. So as well as being an author, with a number of staged works, you’ll find him treading the boards locally, and appearing vocally in a number of audio dramas.

WRONG TURN COMING BACK by Richard Layton

We’ve all seen those magazines on their newsstands with their incredible but true stories and promises of cash paid. Sometimes a story is so out of this world that it’s just too good to check…

Richard joined Derbyshire Scriptwriters in 2004 and after brief stints as Theatre Liaison Officer and Vice Chairman; he became the group’s secretary and has been ever since. In addition to writing the minutes he made a contribution to Chesterfield Tales for Tabs Productions and he has also written two full length plays for Rumpus Theatre Company – The Horrific Case of Mr. Valdemar and The Devil’s Bride adapted from Edgar Allan Poe and Joseph Sheridan LeFanu respectively. His work has also been showcased in the Pomegranate Playwrights Festival in Chesterfield and he has had work produced by Pintsized Plays in both the UK and New Zealand. He has also written short scripts for Pomegranate Playwrights and Derby Movie Makers, some of which he has then ruined by performing in them but he is happy today to leave the acting to the professionals.

Six Plays, One Day- our 5.30 performance

As we’re getting ready for our festival of plays on Saturday 21st September 2024 at Derby Theatre, here’s a little bit about the two plays you can see at 5.30pm:

THE REVOLT OF THE EARLS by John Hassall

“The Revolt Of The Earls” is set in Norman times and involves the plot to usurp King William and Queen Matilda from the throne of England. Bishop Odo, William’s half brother plots and schemes with a Northern Earl, Waltheof.

John has been writing short stories, sketches and short plays for about three years. Rapidly approaching his seventieth birthday he was pleasantly surprised when his play was selected to be part of the event. John would like to thank his fellow members of Derbyshire Scriptwriters Group from whom he has the most positive and instructive support since joining.

THE ASSESSMENT by Hugh Jones

Hugh started his playwriting journey just over three years ago. With The Assessment he explores the idea of a world where a maximum wealth limit of $10 million dollars is in place. Anyone over the maximum wealth limit is subject to an assessment to see how they would cope on “limited” means. Hugh is looking forward to developing The Assessment from its original one act format into a full length play.

Six Plays, One Day- our 2.30 performance

As we’re getting ready for our festival of plays on Saturday 21st September 2024 at Derby Theatre, here’s a little bit about the two plays you can see at 2.30pm:

BROKEN RECORD by Andrew Kells

Broken Record is about British eccentricity, sibling jealousy and finding a way to honour the past without repeating it. There may or may not be a record broken on stage.

About Andrew:

Andrew’s first memory of writing was a poem about the life cycle of bees in junior school, and that it didn’t end well for the bees.  Since then, he’s written short stories, training manuals, national radio advertising campaigns, stage and film scripts, and two novels, but leaves poetry to the professionals.

PARTY GAMES by Lynda Aylett-Green

“I often find the behaviour of politicians almost farcical when in fact what they are debating is of national importance and affects all of us – how do they manage to get elected? Party Games shows a local constituency office trying to select a candidate for an election and given the problems confronting politicians today not many people would want the job. In this satirical sketch the candidate who comes forward is outrageously unsuitable … but she is the only one and she brings a large contribution to party funds, so what should they do?”
